A couple of years ago I went a week with out internet at home while was switching ISP's and the thought of disconnecting the internet from home permanently entered my head for the first time. Over the last couple of months the thought of disconnecting the internet from home has resurfaced. After using terminal clients to view the web and limiting my time on the internet, I've realised how little I actual need to use the internet to do critical things I need to do on the internet takes less then 10 minutes a day, and even then I don't need to do it everyday. When I let my self "use" the internet I end up getting sucked into a black hole of brain rot and never do anything meaningful. Even to keep my self informed on whats going on around me does not take up much time either. Also about 75% of the stuff I do on my computer does not require an internet connection either, video editing, web development(this website), photography all can be done offline. I'm also getting pissed off with dealing with ISP's in general, My ISP just increased my monthly fee, after saying I will be locked in for 2 years at a particular price and the modem\router they sent me requires a cellphone app do basic things like change the wifi password, and you can not shut off the wifi either, mind you I have my own router plugged in as well.
So instead of using the internet at home I'm going to be using public wifi at coffee shops and the Library. I only really need to go on the internet two to three times a week to be able to do the critical things I need to do. For YouTube I'm just going to rip the YouTube videos I want to watch, and watch them when I get home, or just rip the audio and listen to them while driving to and from work. However the one thing that is really holding me back from completely disconnecting the internet at home is that I want to do a bunch of courses online that involve group meetings online, and I typically do not want to be on talking to people on skype and zoom in a public space mostly because I think its kinda rude. The same goes with doing languages classes, I don't really want to be sitting in a public space, repeating Old English words out lound when others are around.
Before I disconnect the internet, I'm going to start using the internet every other day at home and limiting my activity to the bare minimum online at home, only checking emails, stocks price and banking. I'm also thinking of setting up a file and media server on one of my old laptops to run over my LAN to act as a backup server. I've noticed while doing this I have developed a "I'm paying for it, I have to use it" mentality. This mentality is not necessarily bad, having this mentality when you're paying for a Gym membership can be a good thing, but it can be bad if your saying for a subscription service, and mindlessly watching content simply because you're paying for it.
However all of this brings up the issue of self control and mastery. I can either go the learn self control and discipline route and keep the internet at home and rarely use it, or I have give into my impulses and just completely disconnect the internet at home. I have found that unplugging my modem and router works pretty well at keeping from using the internet at home, unless I need too.
Disconnecting the internet at home is another step forward in stepping out from modern society and a result breaking away from the nihilism that consumes it. Ever since I deleted all my social media, stopped using a "Smart Phone"(I use a DE googled smart phone, its a good balance between a dumbphone and smart phone), started doing Yoga more regularly and practicing the indigenous belief system of my Anglo-Saxon ancestors(Germanic Heathery), and the more I continue with this process the more my life improves, the more I mentally disconnect my self from the modern world, the better life gets. I will also stress that removing ones self from modern society does not mean becoming some crazy hermit or worse ending up like Uncle Ted.
