Jami is a decentralized instant messenger network, which is peer-to-peer and has end to end encryption by default. It also supports video calling, group video calling, conference calling and group chats.
Jami is peer-to-peer, meaning you directly connected to the person you are messaging with, instead of the connection going through a centralized server. All connections are encrypted end-to-end with an RSA-4096 encryption key.(RSA-4096 is one of the strongest encryption standard in the world, stronger then “military grade” AES-256). Since Jami is peer to peer all messages you send are stored on your device instead of a centralized server.
The only centralized part about Jami is connecting to the tracker servers(similar to torrent tracking servers), tracking servers act like a “Phone book” to connect user together when online. All users are identified by a hash and not their user name. If you do not want to use any of the public Jami tracking servers you can setup your own tracking server either on your home network or on a VPS.
All your account information is stored locally on your device, as opposed to being stored on a centralized server. You do not have to input any kinda of personally identifiable information, like phone numbers or emails to setup an account(like with signal). You can also install the same account of multiple devices as well(This can mitigate the offline message problem). Also you can set a password to encrypt your messages locally on your device, although and pictures sent over Jami will not be.
The downside to using Jami is that both users have to be online to message one another(so no offline messaging). This is a less of issue if you’re using Jami on a cellphone that’s connected to the internet most of the time, but more of an issue if you running Jami on a desktop/laptop.
Jami can be run on Windows,Linux, Mac OS, iOS and Android.
Aside from the issue of not being able to message people offline(this impacts me a bit more because I don’t use a smart-phone) Jami is one of best instant messenger in terms of privacy and security, and better then signal(which requires a phone number to use, and is centralized)
